I organized a Train Themed Birthday Party for Eric’s first birthday. I made him a Train Cake and a Smash Cake to go with the theme. In this post I will show you the DIY decorations and store-bought supplies we used. Check out my prior post if you want to see ideas for Finger Foods, Snacks and Drinks!
I will also give you some more ideas generated by my new virtual assistant in the kitchen – ChatGPT.
DIY Decorations
We created an adorable train track using photos of baby Eric. You will need some white, red and black paper (ideally, cardstock) to create the railroad crossing sign and the train tracks. Then use some double sided tape to stick them to the wall. Choose your most favourite photos of your little one and use some double sided tape to stick them to the wall.
You can buy the paper from your local dollar store or from Amazon.
For the party favours I made a ‘baggage claim’ area. Just take a carry-on suitcase and fill it with goodie bags. I wrote ‘baggage claim’ on a small chalkboard sign and placed it above the suitcase.
Here are some good items from Amazon to add to your goodie bags:
Party Supplies
I bought most of the other party supplies from Party City (in GTA, Canada).
However, you can find plenty of options on Amazon as well – from paper plates, cups and napkins to balloons, table centrepieces and party hats. You can also get some cheap conductor accessories for a fun photoshoot. Here are some of the options on Amazon:
Other DIY Decoration Ideas
Lastly, here are some more DIY decorations recommended by the chatbot:
- Train-shaped balloons: Blow up a few large black and red round balloons and use a marker to draw a train shape on them.
- Train track table runner: Use brown construction paper or craft paper to cut out long, thin rectangles and arrange them on a table to resemble train tracks.
- Train station sign: Cut out a large sign shape from cardboard and paint it with the words “Train Station” or the name of the party. You can also add some train-related details to the sign.
- Train station clock: Cut out a clock face from cardboard and paint it to look like an old-fashioned train station clock.
- Train-themed photo booth: you can use cardboard and paint to make a train-shaped frame for guests to take photos in front of.
- Train-shaped garlands: Cut out train shapes from construction paper and string them together to create a colorful garland to hang in the party area.
- Train-themed tablecloth: Use a plain tablecloth and use fabric paint or markers to draw train tracks and other train-related designs on it.
- Train-themed name tags: Cut out train shapes from cardstock and write each guest’s name on them. You can use a hole punch and string to make them into name tags.
- Train-themed place cards: Cut out train-shaped place cards and write each guest’s name on them. Place them on the table in front of each place setting.
I hope you found all these train themed birthday party ideas useful! Stay tuned for the next post in which I will show you how to make the train-shaped cake!
