Ingredients
- you favourite vanilla or chocolate cupcakes – I used the recipe for my perfectly moist chocolate cupcakes
- mascarpone & whipped cream frosting OR simply buttercream
- black gel food colouring (optional)
- a drop of clear alcohol like vodka (optional)
- soccer ball silicone mold – I used the bottom part of this soccer ball ice cube silicone mold (affiliate link)
Directions
Bake your cupcakes and prepare the frosting.
As mentioned above, I used these perfectly moist chocolate cupcakes and a delicious mascarpone & whipped cream frosting that you can make in under 5 minutes. This frosting is great if you’re not looking for something overly sweet. Otherwise, buttercream can be used.
Get your silicone mold shaped like a soccer ball (hemisphere) ready. I used the bottom part of this soccer ball ice cube silicone mold (affiliate link).
To create the soccer ball design, take your silicone mold and fill each cavity with white frosting.
Tap the mold gently on the counter to remove any air bubbles.
Carefully place each cupcake upside down onto the frosting in the mold, pressing gently to ensure they adhere.
Also, note that I filled some cupcakes with a whipped chocolate ganache frosting. But this is totally optional!
Freeze the cupcakes for at least 2 hours or until the frosting is very firm.
Once the frosting is completely firm, gently remove each cupcake from the silicone mold by pushing from the bottom of the mold.
If desired, paint the pentagons using a small brush and black gel food colouring. Mix a bit of gel food colouring with a drop of clear alcohol (such as vodka) or food-grade extract to achieve a paint-like consistency. Do this while the cupcakes are still frozen so that you don’t ruin the design with the paint brush.
Place the cupcakes in an airtight container and store them in the fridge to defrost them.
Enjoy your soccer ball cupcakes as a fun and delicious treat for any soccer-themed event or celebration!
