In this post, I will show you how to organize a Ninja Birthday Party and give you ideas for desserts (with full tutorials on how to make them) as well as for activities and games you can organize for your kids.
Our kids went through a Ninja phase two years ago. They would literally wear Ninja or Ninjago costumes in the house, in the backyard, out in the park and anywhere you can think of. We were happy that our investment in these Halloween costumes were very much worth it 🙂 !
So, needless to say, that year we threw them a Ninja Birthday Party!
Dessert Ideas
Ninjago Cake
I made an easy version of Jay, the master of lightning. It’s a chocolate walnut cake, filled with a chocolate walnut cream and covered with a thin layer of ganache and fondant.
To make the cake layers, triple the recipe in this post to make 3 cakes. I used 8’’ round cake pans and I cut each cake horizontally in two.
You can use a simple sugar syrup to moisten the cake layers. You can make the sugar syrup out of 300 ml water, 7.5 Tbsp sugar and 5 Tbsp rum extract.
For the chocolate walnut filling, use the recipe in this post. Triple the recipe to have ~ 350-400g of filling per cake layer.
Before covering the cake with fondant, you can apply a thin layer of unwhipped ganache to cover all the crumbs and smooth out the surface of the cake. Use 500 g of semi-sweet chocolate and 250 ml of whipping cream and follow the instructions for unwhipped ganache/firm frosting in this post.

Ninjago Cake Pops
Cake pops are always a great hit with the kids and adults alike.
I used this recipe to make the red velvet & cream cheese cake pops and dipped them in yellow candy melts instead of blue. They are decorated with fondant.
What you need:
- cake pops dipped in yellow candy melts
- fondant – white, blue, green, red or black
- black gel food coloring mixed with a drop of vodka – this is used for painting the eyes and eyebrows
- a brush with a fine tip – an exacto knife or some sharp knife
- fondant shaping tools to make the creases / folds; you can also use the back of a knife blade

Ninjago Cake Pops in Mini Ice Cream Cones
My kids love eating ice cream in a cone but also munching on the waffle cones alone. So I thought I’d try something new and place cake pops in ice cream cones. This also allowed me to give the Ninjago cake pops a look that resembled more the real characters, with the longer face covering & more ‘fabric’ creases. I used the same cake pop recipe as above.
What you need:
- cake pops dipped in yellow candy melts and placed on mini ice cream cones (instead of using cake pop sticks); to make these, insert a lollipop or cake pop stick into the cake ball, dip the cake pop in melted candy melts, gently place the covered cake pop on the ice cream cone and remove the stick
- fondant – white, blue, green, red or black
- black gel food coloring mixed with a drop of vodka – this is used for painting the eyes and eyebrows
- a brush with a fine tip
- an exacto knife or some sharp knife
- fondant shaping tools to make the creases / folds; you can also use the back of a knife blade

Activities & Games
Firstly, all the kids got to wear Ninja or Ninjago costumes and be ninjas for an afternoon. We had plenty of costumes from prior Halloween parties so we were able to provide the costumes. All the boys like to pretend that they have what it takes to be a karate master! We gave them some foam nunchucks and swords and let their imagination go wild!
There is really not much you need to do to organize games – the kids are full of ideas and have plenty of imagination on their own!
However, if you’re looking to organize some games, have a look at this post and you will get a few ideas – from Blind Ninja (hide and seek) to making your own Ninja Weapons to testing your karate skills to see if you can kick Ninja Balloons.
Lastly, we set up a projector in our backyard to have a fun movie night. During the cold winter months, you can do a movie night indoors too. I must say that the older kids had more patience for a movie night that the youngsters (4 and below). The younger ones were just super happy pretending like they were ninjas and running around non stop.
