This post is all about Mickey Mouse Cakes & Party Ideas! About 4 years ago, I made a Mickey Mouse cake for my youngest boy. He was 3 at the time. I have just a few pictures that show the process of carving and decorating the cake. So I’ll share these and some tips instead of my usual detailed cake tutorials.
I’ll also share some more Mickey Mouse 3D cake designs generated with an AI-powered app. If you want to know more about this, read my other post: Cake Designs in the Age of AI: More Personalized and Creative Than Ever Before .
Lastly, you’ll find more ideas for Mickey Mouse-themed desserts and other helpful tips in case you’re looking to organize a Mickey Mouse-themed party.
The Making Of… a 3D Mickey Mouse Cake
Here is how I made the 3D Mickey Mouse Cake:
Step 1: I baked a bunch of vanilla cakes – round cakes, sheet / rectangular cakes, and a dome cake for the head. I used simple syrup to moisten the cake layers. You can use my basic cake recipe with just a handful of ingredients or this other recipe for perfectly moist vanilla cakes/cupcakes.
Step 2: I made lots of raspberry cream cheese buttercream with which I filled the cake.
Step 3: I stacked the cake as seen in the picture.
Step 4: I carved the cake with a serrated knife and covered it with a thin layer of frosting (you can just use chocolate ganache directly for this – see step 5) . Note that if you freeze the cake for 1-2 hours (cover it with plastic wrap before), it’s easier to carve it without it crumbling. If not, at least store it in the refrigerator for a few hours so that the buttercream sets and the cake becomes more stable.
Step 5: I used my usual unwhipped chocolate ganache / firm frosting to cover the cake. I applied a think layer to crumb coat the cake. Then, I kept it in the fridge for 1-2 hours and I applied another layer of chocolate ganache. You can smooth it out as much as you can with a spatula.
Step 6: On to the fondant work… I built Mickey’s mouth out of some fondant. You can also build it using cake scraps and chocolate ganache if you want.
Step 7: I covered Mickey’s face with tan-coloured fondant and made its eyes as seen in the picture.
Step 8: I covered the head and body with black fondant in sections. First the head, then I built Mickey’s arm out of black fondant. And lastly, I covered its upper body. I also shaped his hands/gloves out of white fondant.
Step 9: I used red fondant to make Mickey’s pants.
Step 10: Now on to making Mickey pretty… I made the tongue out of a bit of red fondant and the mouth contour out of black fondant. Also, let’s not forget the cute nose made out of black fondant!
Step 11: Lastly, I made Mickey’s ears out of 2 round cardboard pieces (you cut these out of a cake board) which I brushed with water and covered with black fondant. The ears could’ve been a bit bigger… next time 🙃! Insert some toothpicks in the bottom of the ears and secure them to the cake. Also, its tiny little yellow feet show up in the picture too.
Note that the green grass is made out of coconut flakes. You can add coconut to a ziplock bag and add a few drops of green food colouring. Shake the bag very well and the coconut flakes will become green.
And these are the best shots I have of Mickey devoured by the kids 😂 :

Mickey Mouse-Themed Desserts
And since we’re on the topic of cakes and desserts, here are some more ideas:
Mickey Mouse Cupcakes – Cupcakes are a popular alternative to traditional cakes, and they’re easy to customize with Mickey Mouse decorations. You can create Mickey Mouse ears by using Oreo cookies, or brown macarons or fondant, and decorate the cupcakes with buttercream frosting in Mickey’s signature colours of black, white, and red. You can make these from Lil’ Luna’s blog.
Mickey Mouse Rice Krispie Treats – For a fun and easy dessert, try making Mickey Mouse-shaped rice krispie treats. Simply mold the treats into the shape of Mickey’s head like these ones from Two Sisters Crafting website.
Mickey Mouse Cookies – Sugar cookies decorated with Mickey Mouse designs are a cute and tasty option for a Mickey Mouse birthday party. You can use cookie cutters in the shape of Mickey’s head or make easy ones out of Oreos like these ones from Lil Luna.
Mickey Mouse Ice Cream – If you’re having an outdoor party or celebrating in the summer, consider serving Mickey Mouse-shaped ice cream. You can use an ice cream mold to create the shape of Mickey’s head, and decorate with chocolate chips and candy melts. Or you can just buy them pre-made. Several stores (including Walmart) sells these Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bars.
Organizing a Mickey Mouse-Themed Birthday Party
If you’re planning a Mickey Mouse birthday party, here are some more ideas that you might find helpful:
- Mickey Mouse Invitations – Start off by setting the tone for the party with Mickey Mouse-themed invitations. You can find printable invitations online or make your own by using Mickey Mouse stickers, cut-outs, or stencils. Be sure to include all the important details like the date, time, and location of the party.
- Mickey Mouse Decorations – Create a festive atmosphere by decorating the party area with Mickey Mouse-themed decorations such as balloons, streamers, and posters. You can also use Mickey Mouse tablecloths, plates, and cups to make the party feel even more special.
- Mickey Mouse Cake – No birthday party is complete without a birthday cake! Consider making a Mickey Mouse-shaped cake like the one above or any of the Mickey Mouse desserts I shared above.
- Mickey Mouse Games – Plan some fun activities that are age-appropriate for the kids attending the party. You can set up a Mickey Mouse-themed scavenger hunt or have a Mickey Mouse colouring contest. You can also play games like “Pin the Ears on Mickey” or “Musical Chairs” using Mickey Mouse music.
- Mickey Mouse Crafts – Set up a crafting table with materials for making Mickey Mouse ears or other Mickey Mouse-themed crafts. You can also provide colouring pages or printable activities featuring Mickey Mouse to keep the kids entertained.
- Mickey Mouse Party Favours – Send the kids home with some fun party favours, such as Mickey Mouse stickers, temporary tattoos, or small toys. You can also make personalized goody bags with Mickey Mouse-themed items like candy, small toys, and colouring books.
