Learn how to make an easy Spiderman Cake and check out some fun party ideas for a Spiderman-themed birthday party.
About 4 years ago, I made a Spiderman cake for my oldest boy. He was 6 at the time. I have just a few pictures that show the process of carving and decorating the cake. So, I’ll share these and some tips instead of my usual detailed cake tutorials.
Lastly, you’ll find more ideas for a Spiderman-themed birthday party.
The Making Of… a Spiderman Cake
Here is how I made the Spiderman Cake:
Step 1: You need to bake a bunch of cakes – a sheet / rectangular cake for the body as well as a round and a dome cake for the head. You can use my recipe for perfectly moist chocolate cakes/cupcakes to make the cakes. You can use simple syrup to moisten the cake layers if you want the cake extra moist.
Step 2: Make your favourite cake filling. I filled the cake with this chocolate filling with walnuts.
Step 3: You might need to make a paper template so that you can use it as a guide to carve the cake. I made one.
Step 4: Once you have the template and cakes ready and filled, carve Spiderman’s body using a serrated knife. I covered it with a thin layer of chocolate filling that I saved before adding the walnuts in (you can just use chocolate ganache directly for this – see step 5). Note that if you freeze the cake for 1-2 hours (cover it with plastic wrap before), it’s easier to carve it without it crumbling. If not, at least store it in the refrigerator for a few hours.
Step 5: I used my usual unwhipped chocolate ganache / firm frosting to cover the cake. You need to apply a thin layer of ganache to crumb coat the cake. Then, keep it in the fridge for 1-2 hours and apply another layer of chocolate ganache. You can smooth it out as much as you can with a spatula.
Step 6: Cover the cake in red and blue fondant as seen in the pictures.
Step 7: Make Spiderman’s eyes out of white fondant, a belt out of red fondant and the spider on its back out of black fondant.
Step 8: Cover the part of the cake board that is still visible in black fondant and place yellow fondant squares on top to resemble the windows of a building.
Step 9: Then, use black decorating icing to pipe the outline of the eyes and all the spider webs on the its head and body. Note that I made sure to hide most of the fondant seams with the black icing.
Organizing a Spiderman-Themed Birthday Party
If you’re planning a Spiderman birthday party, here are some more ideas that you might find helpful:
- Decorations – Create a Spiderman-themed atmosphere by decorating the party area with Spiderman balloons, streamers, posters, and tableware (e.g. plates, cups, and napkins) with Spiderman’s face and logo.
- Spiderman Costume – Encourage your child and the guests to dress up as Spiderman or any other superhero.
- Spiderman Cake – No birthday party is complete without a birthday cake! Consider making a Spiderman-shaped cake like the one above or order one.
- Spider Web Hunt – Set up a spider web hunt by hiding plastic spiders around the party area and encouraging the kids to find them all.
- Pin the Spider on the Web – Create a large Spiderman web and blindfold the kids to pin Spiderman onto the web.
- Spiderman Colouring Contest – Print out Spiderman colouring pages and let the kids participate in a colouring contest. You can give prizes to the best ones.
- Spiderman Movie Screening – Set up a projector and screen a Spiderman movie for the kids to watch while enjoying some snacks and drinks.
- Spiderman Piñata – Fill a Spiderman piñata with candy and small toys, and let the kids take turns hitting it with a stick.
- Spiderman Goodie Bags – Prepare Spiderman-themed goodie bags for the kids to take home, including Spiderman stickers, pencils, and small toys.
In addition to a birthday cake, you can make Spiderman-inspired desserts like these ones:
- Spiderweb Cupcakes – Make cupcakes with vanilla frosting and then use black frosting to create a spiderweb pattern on top. You can add a small Spiderman figurine or a spider made out of fondant on top for extra decoration.
- Spider Cookies – Make sugar cookies and use red and blue frosting to decorate them with Spiderman’s face or logo. You can also use black frosting to create spiderwebs on the cookies.
- Spiderman Popcorn – Pop some plain popcorn and then drizzle it with melted red and blue candy melts. Mix in some red and blue M&M’s or other candy to create a Spiderman-themed popcorn mix.
- Spiderman Rice Krispies Treats – Make Rice Krispies Treats and shape them into Spiderman’s face or logo using a cookie cutter. Then, decorate them with red and blue frosting and black icing to create spiderwebs.
- Spiderman Chocolate Covered Strawberries – Dip strawberries into red and blue chocolate and use black icing to create spiderwebs on top.
Lastly, here are some Spiderman drink ideas that you can serve at your child’s Spiderman-themed birthday party:
- Spiderman Punch – Mix together blue Hawaiian Punch, red fruit punch, and lemon-lime soda to create a colourful Spiderman punch. You can add some Spiderman-themed ice cubes made with red and blue food colouring to make it even more festive.
- Spiderman Smoothie – Blend together frozen bananas, blueberries, and strawberries with vanilla yogurt to create a healthy and colourful Spiderman smoothie.
- Spidey Soda – Serve up blue soda (such as blue Fanta or blue Mountain Dew) in Spiderman-themed cups with a red straw. You can also add a Spiderman ring to each cup for an extra touch of fun.
- Spiderman Slushie – Blend together ice, blue raspberry syrup, and lemon-lime soda to create a refreshing Spiderman slushie. You can top it with whipped cream and red and blue sprinkles for added colour and flavour.
