Use your favourite pancake batter or the ingredients and recipe below to make these Red Heart Pancakes. My kids love these for breakfast or as a dessert and they are so easy to make!
To make the red batter you will need half a teaspoon of red gel food colouring. For the heart cutouts you can use a 6.5 cm (2.5 inch) heart-shaped cookie cutter. I coloured only half of the batter in red. Then I switched the heart cutouts by placing a red heart in the regular white pancake and a white heart in the red pancake.
Ingredients (for 30 pancakes)
- 465 g (3 cups) all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 80 g sugar
- 1.5 teaspoons salt
- 3 eggs
- 720 ml milk
- 90 g unsalted butter, melted (or vegetable oil)
- oil for frying
- powdered sugar, honey, maple syrup, fresh fruit etc. for serving
- 1/2 tsp red gel food colouring
- a 6.5 cm (2.5 inch) heart-shaped cookie cutter
Directions
Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl.
Mix the egg yolks, milk and melted butter in another bowl.
Slowly combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients. Mix until the dry ingredients are almost combined, it’s ok to still have some lumps. Do not overmix as your pancakes won’t be fluffy!
Whip the egg whites until soft peaks form. Slowly fold the egg whites into the batter using a spatula. Split your batter in two and slowly mix in the red food colouring in half the batter.
Heat a griddle on medium heat. Brush a bit of oil and scoop the batter onto the griddle to form the pancakes. Cook them on each side until they turn slightly brown.
Use the heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the heart shapes. You might need to use a sharp paring knife to fully cut the hearts if the cookie cutter edges are not too sharp. Then switch the heart cutouts by placing a red heart in the regular white pancake and a white heart in the red pancake. Sprinkle some powdered sugar on top and serve them with your favourite toppings.
