I made five fondant penguins and a few Christmas trees and used them to decorate my second Christmas cake. You could use them to decorate cupcakes as well.
The ones lying on their backs are too cute :)!
Materials & Tools:
- Black ,white, orange and red fondant
- Rolling pin
- Blade or flower leaf tool for making small creases
- Small leaf cutter
- Some cornstarch for dusting
- Exacto knife or any other small sharp knife
- Edible glue – water works just fine
Shape some white fondant into an egg shape. Depending how you want the penguins (standing, lying on their back etc.), bend the shape at the center and curve the body. I only curved them for the ones lying on their back. The narrow end will be the head. Using the blade tool, make small creases around the neck and belly.
Roll out black fondant very thinly and cut out a teardrop shape and two leaves which will be the wings. I made a paper template for the teardrop shape, placed it on top of the fondant and cut around it using an exacto knife… but you could also use a teardrop cutter if you have one.
Make two eyes out of black fondant.
Shape a small cone out of orange fondant for he beak. Using a small pair of scissors or the exacto knife cut through the middle of the cone at the pointy end to form the top and bottom of the beak.
Make two small triangles out of orange fondant for the feet and indent the toes using the blade tool.
For the Santa hat, shape a cone out of red fondant. Bend the pointy end a bit and attach the bobble made out of white fondant. Attach a small white strip of fondant around the base of the hat using some water.
Attach the teardrop shape around the penguin body using some water, allowing the pointed end to drape over the centre of the face. Note that the size of the teardrop shape depends on how big/small your penguins are. You should be able to wrap it around the body as seen in the picture. Attach the eyes as well.
Brush the wider half of the wings with water and attach them to the body.
Attach the feet using water as well.
Brush some water on the penguin’s head and the bottom of the Santa hat and place it on the head.
