I had so much fun transforming a watermelon into a boat! This Watermelon Boat is easy to make and would make a great centrepiece for any kids party or summer gathering.
Ingredients/Materials
- 1 oblong watermelon (Allsweet, Picnic or Sweet Beauty type etc.)
- 1-2 oranges
- 1 lemon
- 12 grapes
- 13 skewers
- a sharp knife
Directions
Watch this video to see how to make the watermelon boat:
Wash the watermelon, oranges and lemon.
Cut the top 2/3 of the watermelon, lengthwise, into three equal slices in height.
Mark the middle of the slices, and cut each slice in half.
Then, starting with the bigger slice, arrange each half on the watermelon boat base, by placing each half a slice halfway out. Secure these two pieces in place with 4 skewers, with one inserted in each corner of the slice. Make sure you pass each skewer through the slice and the base of the watermelon boat.
Move on to the medium-sized slice. Arrange the two half slices in a similar way – half way on the boat and half way hanging out. Secure these slices in place with four skewers as well, ensuring you pass the skewers through all the watermelon slices and the boat base.
Lastly, turn the two halves of the small watermelon slice with the cut side up. Place them on the boat, all the way at the edges of the medium-sized slices and secure them in place with a skewer each. Insert the skewers at an angle and leave them 1/3 out. Thread 3 grapes on each of these skewer ends.
Cut all the skewers to the height of the boat deck you made.
Make the boat sails out of orange and lemon peels. You just need to cut each orange and lemon in quarters and score the the fruit with a small paring knife so that the peel remains intact.
Insert 3 skewers to make the mainmast, foremast and mizzenmast. Then, insert the ends of the orange and lemon sails through the skewer masts.
I also placed a few grapes in between the sails.
My boat wasn’t fully balanced after I added all the sails so I placed half an orange on the boat deck to balance it. However, you can cut a super thin slice from the bottom of the watermelon to provide a stable base. Do this right at the begging when you start slicing the watermelon.
Enjoy!
