Caprese Skewers are a simple, delicious and versatile appetizer that is perfect for any occasion. This classic Italian dish combines the fresh flavours of ripe tomatoes, creamy mozzarella cheese, and fragrant basil leaves in a bite-sized, easy-to-eat format. These skewers are a great choice for a variety of events, from casual outdoor barbecues to elegant cocktail parties, and they are sure to impress your guests with their vibrant colours and delicious taste.
While the classic caprese skewers are delightful on their own, you can add some variations to create exciting and unique flavour combinations. I have included plenty of other ideas below.
Ingredients (3 skewers)
- 12 small mozzarella cheese balls also known as bocconcini, packed in water
- 12 cherry or grape tomatoes
- 3 wood skewers
- 12 fresh basil leaves
- olive oil
- salt & pepper
Directions
Drain the mozzarella balls and pat them dry before using them.
Thread one cherry or grape tomato, one mozzarella cheese ball, and one fresh basil leaf onto each skewer. Keep threading more tomatoes, cheese balls and basil leaves in the same way so that you end up with the pattern in the image below.
Arrange the skewers on a serving platter. Drizzle the olive oil over them just before serving. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
While the classic caprese skewers are delightful on their own, you can make other variations such as:
- Prosciutto-Wrapped Caprese Skewers: Add a thin slice of prosciutto (Italian cured ham) between the tomato and mozzarella for a savoury twist.
- Avocado Caprese Skewers: Introduce slices of ripe avocado to the skewer for a creamy and rich addition.
- Pesto Caprese Skewers: Instead of fresh basil leaves, use basil pesto to coat the mozzarella and tomatoes.
- Balsamic Reduction Drizzle: Make a balsamic reduction by simmering balsamic vinegar until it thickens and becomes syrupy. Drizzle this reduction over the skewers for an intense flavour boost.
- Caprese Skewer Salad: Create a salad version by adding mixed greens or arugula to the skewer along with the classic ingredients. Toss the skewers with a light vinaigrette for added zing.
- Mediterranean Caprese Skewers: Use kalamata olives and a sprinkle of dried oregano to infuse a Mediterranean flair.
- Balsamic Strawberry Caprese Skewers: Substitute cherry tomatoes with strawberries and add a balsamic reduction or glaze for a delightful sweet and tangy combination.
- Caprese Bruschetta Skewers: Replace the mozzarella with small cubes of toasted baguette, turning the skewers into bite-sized bruschetta.
Feel free to get creative and mix and match these variations to suit your taste preferences and the occasion. Caprese skewers are versatile and can be adapted to fit various dietary preferences and themes. Enjoy!
