Egg Chicks & Bunnies

Egg Chicks & Bunnies

In this post, I’ll show you how to make Egg Chicks and Bunnies, complete with eyes made from black olives and noses or beaks made from carrots. These charming creations are not only fun to make, but they also make for a festive and unique addition to your Easter table or any springtime celebration. So let’s crack some eggs and get started!

Egg Chicks Filled with Potato & Egg Salad

Egg Chicks Filled with Potato & Egg Salad

Ingredients (4 egg chicks)

  • 4 large hard-boiled & peeled eggs
  • 1 black olives, sliced
  • 1 baby carrot, sliced into rings
  • 4 Tbsp of your favourite potato & egg salad, without big chunks of potatoes; if you don’t want to use this, then you need 4 extra egg yolks to make the chicks’ heads
  • 8 parsley leaves
  • 2 toothpicks
  • 1 Wilton/Ateco round decorating tip #8 (or a 3/4’’ round cutter)
Egg Chicks Filled with Potato & Egg Salad - Ingredients

Directions

Cut 1/3 of the egg, lengthwise, making sure you don’t cut the egg yolk too. Carefully remove the egg yolk which will become the egg chick’s head. Note that you can fully cut the egg and leave the egg yolk inside but you will need the 4 extra egg yolks to make the chicks’ heads.

Fill 2/3 of the egg white with potato egg salad and place it on a serving platter. Insert half a toothpick in it, about 1.25 cm (0.5’’) away from the pointy edge of the egg, leaving a third of the toothpick out. Then, carefully insert the part of the toothpick that’s out into the egg yolk to secure it in place.

Use the small part of the round decorating tip to cut the eyes out of a black olive slice. Use the same tip to make tiny holes for the eyes and the hole for the beak in the egg yolk. Place the olives in to make the eyes and a tiny piece of carrot to make the beak.

Egg Bunnies

Egg Bunnies

Ingredients (2 bunnies)

  • 3 large hard-boiled & peeled eggs
  • 1 black olive, sliced
  • 1 baby carrot, sliced into rings
  • dill for the whiskers
  • 1 Wilton/Ateco round decorating tip #8 (or a 3/4’’ round cutter)
Egg Bunnies - Ingredients

Directions

Cut an egg in half, lengthwise. Then cut one half in half lengthwise to make two bunny ears. Cut the round part of the other half to make one flat egg slice – this will become the bunny’s body. From the tiny (mostly) egg white bit that’s left, make the bunny’s feet.

Cut a round egg slice from another egg to make the bunny’s face.

Use the small part of the round decorating tip to cut the eyes of out a black olive slice.

Make the nose out of a baby carrot slice and the whiskers out of dill.

Repeat the same steps to make the second bunny.

Deviled Egg Chicks

Deviled Egg Chicks

Ingredients (6 deviled egg chicks)

  • 6 large hard-boiled & peeled eggs
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • salt & pepper
  • 1 black olive, sliced
  • 2 baby carrots, sliced into rings
  • 1 Wilton/Ateco round decorating tip #8 (or a 3/4’’ round cutter)
Deviled Egg Chicks - Ingredients

Directions

Cut off the top third of each egg.

If the bottom each egg is not too flat, then cut off a thin slice from the base as well to give it a flat surface to stand on a platter.

Remove the egg yolks and place them in a bowl. Add the mayonnaise, lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste. Mash everything together until smooth.

Spoon mixture generously into the egg bases using a teaspoon. Use your teaspoon to make the mixture smooth on the sides by pressing and dragging it down gently. That way your egg chicks will look nice and neat.

Use the small part of the round decorating tip to cut the eyes of out a black olive slice. Place them on the egg chick. Cut your carrot slices into triangles to make the beaks. Slowly push these into the egg yolk mixture / chick’s face.

Cut your carrot slices into triangles to make the beaks.

Place back the top third of the egg white you cut at the beginning. Press it down gently so that it adheres to the egg yolk mixture.

Tips for Peeling Eggs Without Breaking Them

Note that not all eggs peel easily so it’s better to boil a few extra eggs to be on the safe side. Here are some steps you can follow to peel hard boiled eggs without breaking them:

  1. Start with older eggs: Eggs that are a week or two old are easier to peel than fresh eggs. This is because the membrane inside the shell separates from the egg as it ages, making it easier to remove the shell.
  2. Cool the eggs down: After boiling the eggs, let them cool down in cold water or an ice bath for at least 5-10 minutes. This will help the egg shrink slightly and separate from the shell, making it easier to peel.
  3. Peel under running water: Peel the egg under running water, holding it in one hand and gently tapping the shell with the other hand. The water will help to rinse away any small bits of shell that might otherwise stick to the egg.
