Easter is around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than by dyeing and decorating eggs in unique and creative ways? In this post, I’ll show you How to Dye and Decorate Eggs in 3 Creative Ways to make your eggs stand out this holiday season.

Ingredients/Supplies

For the Natural Dye (Onion Skin):

onion skins from at least 2 kilograms (4.5 lbs) of onions
pot
eggs (15 eggs)
paper towels
cooking oil

For the Paper Napkin Technique:

eggs (brown or white)
paper napkins (preferably with colourful designs)
brush
beaten egg white
scissors

For the Speckled Effect with Food Colouring and Rice:

white rice (200 g or 1 cup per bag or different colour you want to make)
plastic zipper bags
liquid food colouring of your choice
eggs

1. Dyeing Eggs Naturally with Onion Skins

Place the onion skins in a pot and wash them thoroughly.
Add the eggs to the pot and cover them with water.
Bring the water to a boil over medium heat and let it boil for 7 minutes.
Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for an additional 30 minutes.
Carefully remove the eggs from the pot and place them on paper towels to dry.
Buff the eggs with cooking oil to give them a shiny finish.

2. Decorating Eggs with the Paper Napkin Technique

Hard boil the eggs for 7-8 minutes.
Peel off the colourful layer of the paper napkins and discard the plain white layers.
Cut the colourful layer of the napkin into small pieces that will fit over the eggs. Each of my napkins was 12.5 cm x 12.5 cm (5’’ x 5’’), when folded. So after I peeled the colourful layer, I cut each napkin into 4 pieces.
While the eggs are still hot/warm, brush a thin layer of beaten egg white onto the surface of the egg.
Place a piece of napkin over the egg and press it down firmly.
Brush more egg white over the napkin to smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles.
Let the eggs dry completely before displaying or storing them.

3. Creating a Speckled Effect with Food Colouring and Rice

Hard boil white eggs for 7-8 minutes.
Pour white rice into a plastic zipper bag (about 200 grams per bag).
Add a few drops of liquid food colouring to the bag and seal it.
Gently shake the bag to distribute the colour evenly throughout the rice.
Place a white hard-boiled egg inside the bag and shake it gently to coat the egg with coloured rice.
Repeat the process with different colours to create a variety of speckled effects.
Let the eggs dry before handling them.
